In late spring and early summer this trail has lovely wildflowers from wild blueberries, flame azaleas, to rhododendron. This trail is frequently windy and colder than lower elevations so it is good to wear layers on this trail even in summer.

Nice hike on reasonable paths, sometimes wet from the water that comes from the mountain. Use good shoes and bring enough water is a tip. But also to buy a parking ticket at the visitor center for that day.

Yes, Tennessee has many trails suitable for families and beginners. For a very accessible option, the Laurel Falls Trail is a paved path leading to a beautiful 80-foot waterfall. Another great choice is the trail to Cataract Falls, which is a short and rewarding walk that's manageable for all skill levels.
Tennessee is famous for its waterfalls. A popular hike is the Trillium Gap Trailhead to Grotto Falls, where the path uniquely goes behind the 25-foot waterfall. For a more moderate option with a powerful cascade, the Abrams Falls Trail follows a scenic creek to a large-volume waterfall.
Dog policies vary by park. In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, pets are generally only allowed on a few specific trails, such as the Gatlinburg Trail, and in campgrounds and picnic areas. They are not permitted on most other trails. However, many of Tennessee's State Parks, like Fall Creek Falls State Park, are more dog-friendly. Always check the specific park's regulations before you go.
Hiking is possible year-round, but spring and fall are often considered the best seasons. Spring (April-May) brings pleasant temperatures and blooming wildflowers, especially the famous rhododendrons. Autumn (September-November) offers cooler, drier weather and spectacular fall foliage. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter can bring snow and ice, particularly at higher elevations.
Absolutely. For a strenuous climb with rewarding views, the Alum Cave Trail to Mount LeConte is a classic challenge, ascending nearly 3,000 feet to one of the highest peaks in the park. Another steep and demanding route is the Chimney Tops trail, which leads to a unique bare rock summit with panoramic vistas.
It's essential to be prepared for changing weather. Key items include:
Layers of clothing: A moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof rain jacket.
Navigation: A map and compass or a fully charged phone with offline maps.
Food and Water: Bring more than you think you'll need.
Safety: A small first-aid kit, headlamp, and sun protection (hat, sunscreen).
Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good traction are a must.
