The roundtrip hike to Alum Cave Bluffs is 4.4 miles and usually takes about 2-3 hours to complete. If you continue past the bluffs to Mount LeConte, the full 11-mile roundtrip can take 6-8 hours or more, depending on your pace.
The trail offers diverse terrain. The initial mile is a gradual ascent through a lush forest, crossing log bridges. Beyond that, it becomes steeper and more challenging, featuring rock stairs, particularly through Arch Rock, and cable handrails in certain sections. The path can be very rocky and potentially slippery when wet.
You'll encounter several unique features. About 1.3 miles in, you'll pass through Arch Rock, a natural arch. Around 2 miles, Inspiration Point offers breathtaking panoramic views. The trail culminates at 2.3 miles at Alum Cave Bluffs, a massive concave rock formation that's a popular resting spot.
The trail is generally considered moderately difficult. The initial section is manageable, but it becomes steeper and more challenging, especially past the first mile. While many families hike to Alum Cave Bluffs, the full ascent to Mount LeConte is strenuous. Hikers should be prepared for rocky sections and elevation gain. It's not recommended for very young children or those unaccustomed to hiking.
Spring and fall are often considered the best times due to pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage (spring wildflowers, fall colors). Summer can be warm and humid, but the forest provides shade. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear for icy conditions, especially in higher elevations and shaded areas where cable handrails may be necessary.
No, dogs are not permitted on the Alum Cave Trail. To protect wildlife and natural resources, pets are only allowed on two paved trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park: the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail.
There is no entrance fee to enter Great Smoky Mountains National Park. However, a parking tag is now required for any vehicle parked for more than 15 minutes within the park boundaries. You can purchase daily, weekly, or annual parking tags online or at various locations within the park.
The Alum Cave Trailhead is located on Newfound Gap Road (US-441) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, approximately 8 miles from Gatlinburg, Tennessee. There is a dedicated parking lot at the trailhead. During peak season and on weekends, this lot fills up very early. Arriving before 7:00 AM is highly recommended to secure a spot.
The Alum Cave Trail is primarily an out-and-back trail. Most hikers turn around at Alum Cave Bluffs. However, it also serves as a popular route to reach the summit of Mount LeConte, which is also an out-and-back extension from the bluffs.
The hike to Alum Cave Bluffs involves an elevation gain of approximately 1,125 to 1,200 feet over 2.3 miles from the trailhead.
Due to its immense popularity, especially during peak season and on weekends, the parking lot at the trailhead fills up extremely early. To avoid frustration and ensure you get a spot, plan to arrive well before 7:00 AM. Alternatively, consider hiking on a weekday or during the off-season.
