Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain in the United States east of the Mississippi River. The peak sits at 6,684 feet and is surrounded by hiking trails, scenic driving and biking roads, picnic areas, and campgrounds. You'll likely see a lot of other visitors once you get up here to the parking lot at the summit. There is a small, seasonal concession stand, bathrooms, and a water fountain here at the top.

The Ridge Junction Overlook is situated at Milepost 355.3 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and is just outside of Mount Mitchell State Park. The viewpoint is nearly a mile in the sky (5,160 feet elevation) and shows off the southern ridge leading to the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. The viewpoint used to be a bit overgrown, but there has been recent maintenance in the area that cleared the overgrowth.
