Castle Acre Priory is open to the public through the care of English Heritage. It is well worth paying to go in, but if you aren't able to, there is a sneaky view of the impressive priory ruins from here. It dates back to Norman times and was built by William de Warenne, the 2nd Earl of Surrey, in 1089. It was home to the first Cluniac monks in England and unlike some other English monasteries, the ruins are still intact in many places.

Embark on the South Acre loop from Castle Acre for a moderate 4.8-mile (7.7 km) jogging experience, featuring a gentle 194 feet (59 metres) of elevation gain that you can complete in around 51 minutes. This scenic route offers varied terrain, taking you through wooded river valleys, open fields, and farmland. You will follow riverside paths along the chalk stream of the River Nar and an ancient drove road, passing the impressive earthworks of a Norman castle and the ruins of Castle Acre Priory.

When planning your visit, note that the route is mostly paved, though some road sections in South Acre might lack pavements. Refreshments are available in Castle Acre village, making it a convenient starting and ending point. If you bring your dog, please keep it on a lead in certain areas to protect local wildlife and farmland.

This trail is notable for its rich historical context and natural beauty, incorporating sections of the Nar Valley Way and the ancient Peddars Way. The River Nar itself is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, adding to the ecological value of your run. You will also pass through the tiny hamlet of South Acre, offering glimpses of pastoral farmland and St George's Church.
