There’s nothing technically challenging in the slightest about these fells, though their summits can be exposed to harsh weather conditions and there is little by way of shelter up there.
There are many ways up Great Dodd, with approaches from St John’s in the Vale, Threlkeld and Dockray all containing their own charm, as well as good accommodation options. Once on the top, the views are vast, although robbed of foreground interest by the summit plateau’s broad nature.
Perhaps the finest adventure to Great Dodd is to traverse the full length of the Helvellyn range from Grasmere to Threlkeld, the longest stretch of continuous high ground in England.

Its great height means that the distant views from the top are grand. Foreground interest is hampered by the broad nature of its summit plateau. If you're after dramatic precipices, you are better served by Catstycam, Striding Edge and Dollywaggon Pike to the south.
