If you follow the trail down from the trig point back to snake pass summit you pass a couple of surprise waterfalls.

Incredible view of the Edale valley, and much busier Mam tor. Extremely windy, a good wind stopper is a must.

One of the most noted of the Peak District’s tops. Nestled around Errwood Reservoir it make’s for a nice scenic outing but not the best of weather day’s for it today. As Breeze said, the highest point in Cheshire and a UK designated Marilyn.

Many peaks in the High Peak region provide stunning panoramic views. Mam Tor summit and trig point is renowned for its 360-degree vistas of the Hope and Edale Valleys, extending to Manchester on clear days. Similarly, Lose Hill Summit, at the end of the Great Ridge, offers breathtaking views over Mam Tor and the valleys. Shining Tor, the highest point in Cheshire, also provides impressive views across Cheshire, the Peak District, and sometimes even Snowdonia.
Yes, there are options suitable for families. Mam Tor summit and trig point is considered a relatively easy trek, with its summit reachable within an hour from a nearby car park, making it accessible for various fitness levels. The Great Ridge walk from Mam Tor to Lose Hill is also well-paved and popular for its views and manageable terrain.
The High Peak region is rich in unique natural features. Kinder Scout features the impressive Kinder Downfall, the tallest waterfall in the Peak District, which can even blow water upwards in windy conditions or freeze into an ice wall in winter. Below it lies the legendary Mermaid's Pool. Mam Tor, known as the 'Shivering Mountain,' is geologically significant, sitting at the boundary of the Dark Peak (gritstone) and White Peak (limestone) and offering views into the dry gorge of Winnats Pass.
The mountain peaks in High Peak hold significant historical value. Kinder Scout was the site of the 1932 Mass Trespass, a pivotal event for public access to the countryside. Mam Tor's summit hosts the remains of an Iron Age hill fort, dating back to around 1200 BC, with visible ramparts. Bleaklow is notable for the poignant remains of a U.S. air force B-29 Superfortress aircraft that crashed in 1948, serving as a memorial to the airmen.
The High Peak area offers numerous popular hiking trails. You can explore routes like the 'Kinder Scout Circular Walk' or the 'Mam Tor and the Great Ridge Circular'. For those interested in waterfalls, the 'Kinder Reservoir, Kinder Downfall & Kinder Low loop from Bowden Bridge' is a great option. You can find more details and routes in the Hiking around High Peak guide.
Absolutely. For experienced walkers seeking a true wilderness experience, Bleaklow offers remote and rugged terrain with navigational challenges. Kinder Scout also provides rewarding, albeit challenging, walks with dramatic landscapes. You can find difficult routes like 'Kinder Scout & Edale Moor loop from Edale' in the Mountain Hikes around High Peak guide.
Visitors frequently praise the breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment from reaching the summits. For instance, the views from Mam Tor summit and trig point are often described as enchanting, stretching far across the Peak District. Many appreciate the diverse hiking options, from short, accessible ascents to longer, more challenging routes that allow for extended exploration of the area's natural beauty and historical significance.
Kinder Scout is the highest point in the Peak District National Park, standing at 636 meters (2,087 feet) above sea level. While Kinder Low Trig Point is a popular spot on the plateau, the true summit of Kinder Scout lies slightly northeast of it.
Yes, while popular spots like Mam Tor can get busy, there are quieter alternatives. Lose Hill Summit, despite its proximity to Mam Tor, often has fewer visitors, offering a more tranquil experience. Bleaklow also provides a sense of solitude due to its vast and remote moorland plateau, appealing to those seeking a less trodden path.
Mam Tor earned its nickname, the 'Shivering Mountain,' due to its geological instability and propensity for landslips. This characteristic is a result of its unique position at the boundary of the Dark Peak's gritstone and the White Peak's limestone, which contributes to its dynamic landscape.
Many peaks offer fantastic photographic opportunities. The dramatic landscapes of Kinder Scout, especially around Kinder Downfall and its unique rock formations, are highly photogenic. The panoramic views from Mam Tor summit and trig point and Lose Hill Summit, particularly at sunrise or sunset, provide stunning backdrops. The stark beauty and B-29 crash site on Bleaklow also offer unique and reflective subjects for photography.
The terrain varies across the High Peak region. You'll encounter expansive moorland plateaus with peat bogs and heather, especially on Kinder Scout and Bleaklow, which can be uneven and rocky. Gritstone formations are common, and some areas feature well-paved paths, such as sections of the Great Ridge connecting Mam Tor and Lose Hill. Sturdy walking boots are recommended for most trails.
