The Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle (Chiesa di Sant'Andrea Apostolo) is the oldest religious building in Chioggia. Its bell tower (Torre dell'Orologio - Campanile di Sant'Andrea) is a medieval watchtower dating from the mid-10th century, housing the oldest functioning clock in the world. A striking landmark in Chioggia is the campanile of the Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo. The massive tower originally served a defensive purpose. It stands 30 meters tall and rises parallel to the Garibaldi Tower, which formerly belonged to Santa Maria Assunta and stood on the other side of the city. At its base, the walls are 1.40 meters thick, tapering to 1 meter at the top. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1200 and restored in 1912. Since May 31, 1839, the bell tower has housed one of the oldest functioning tower clocks in the world, dating from 1386, which was moved here from the north tower of the old Palazzo Comunale.
