The Horaj Forest is not only a place of rest for tourists and nature lovers, but also an important historical point. Every year, ceremonies are held here to commemorate the Battle of Oleszyce in September 1939. In this battle, soldiers of the 21st Mountain Infantry Division under the command of General Józef Kustroń resisted the German troops. General Kustroń, who personally led the fight, died in this battle, and today his heroism is commemorated by a monument located in the Horaj Forest. The forest can be admired in a new version, thanks to the work carried out by the Oleszyce Forest District. Brig. Gen. Józef Kustroń - one of five generals of the Polish Army who fell on the battlefield of glory in battle with the Germans in September 1939. The end of General Kustroń's life came in the Lubaczów district, where the 21st Mountain Infantry Division (21st DPG) commanded by him fought a fierce battle near Oleszyce on September 15-16, 1939, with the overwhelming forces of the German 45th Infantry Division (45th DP) of Lieutenant General Friedrich Materna. The Germans transported General Kustroń's body by a wagon train to Ułazów. They wrapped it in a so-called celta (a German tent cloth) and placed it in the courtyard of the Greek Catholic rectory. On September 17, it was buried with honors next to the local church. The funeral was attended by a small group of Polish officers (POWs), several residents of Ułazów and a German platoon, which fired a salute. In 1946, the remains of General Kustroń were transported to the Żelichówka cemetery in Lubaczów, where they were placed in a separate section. In 1953, at the request of Aleksandra Kustroń, the widow of the general, the authorities allowed the remains to be transferred at state expense to Nowy Sącz, where the heroic officer spent his youth. Contrary to what is written on the plaque, this is not the place where General Kustroń died. Source: https://1wrzesnia39.pl/39p/artykuly/53452,General-brygady-Jozef-Kustron.html
