The Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz (German: Main Church of Santa Cruz) is a church in Santa Cruz on Madeira. It has been registered as a protected cultural monument since 1948 under the names Igreja Paroquial de Santa Cruz (German: Parish Church of Santa Cruz) and Igreja de São Salvador (German: Church of the Saviour). Construction began in 1507, and the church was completed in the early 16th century in the Manueline-late Gothic style with a three-nave floor plan in the style of the Cathedral of Funchal. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igreja_Matriz_de_Santa_Cruz_(Madeira)

It is a roughly 400-meter-long pebble beach called Praia das Palmeiras. Along the beach are several wooden sunbeds with permanently installed parasols. These sunbeds and parasols can be used free of charge, subject to availability. Since access to the sea via the stones is somewhat difficult, three jetties with steps lead down to the water as an alternative.

At the Levada dos Tornos reservoir, the water pools, creating a mirror-like surface that, in calm weather, reflects the surrounding slopes and clouds. The small reservoir forms a striking contrast between the technical irrigation system and the verdant landscape all around. A short break on the shore is perfect for enjoying the scenery, taking some photos, and soaking up the tranquility far from the towns and villages.

From the viewpoint overlooking the Lombo-Barreto Gorge, a deep valley unfolds before you, with steep, lush green slopes and houses scattered along the flanks. Down in the valley floor, paths, terraces, and small gardens wind along a stream, showcasing Madeira's agricultural side. It's an ideal spot for a short photo stop to take in the depth of the gorge and the interplay between nature and settlement.

The levada tunnel leads you right through the mountain, while beside you the water flows quietly in the narrow channel. In the cool, damp darkness, your footsteps echo – a headlamp, caution, and the occasional duck are essential here. At the exit, you emerge back into the daylight and are often rewarded with fresh views of green slopes, valleys, and the surrounding mountains.
