From this point there is a viewpoint from below, looking up to the Knapsack Viaduct, a fantastic vantage point of the massive bridge towering above. Its construction began in the 1860s, and today regular civilian cars cannot drive on it.

This path is built on the remnants of the Great Western Highway and takes you out to the historic Knapsack Viaduct. As you would expect from a former highway, the path is flat and well maintained, so it's a good option for beginners though the stairs around the viaduct to present some challenges for beginners.

July 26, 2026, Knapsack Viaduct

The Knapsack Viaduct has a long history that started with its design and construction in the mid 1860s. It was originally used for rail traffic before being converted for automobile traffic in 1926 as part of the Great Western Highway. Eventually the M4 Western Motorway was built and road traffic bypassed the viaduct which lead to its closure in 1993. However, it was reopened to pedestrians as part of the Lapstone Zig Zag walk in 1995.
