Wartburg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Nice view, great castle and a well-drivable path to the top, which is not too difficult. A little crowded on the weekend. If necessary, take the small unpaved forest path down. Is on the left about 150 meters after the castle on the way down. But be careful: there are a few stairs.

Brandenburg Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The Brandenburg consists of two plants: the Westburg and the Ostburg. The castles were always in the possession of competing aristocratic families or rulers. In the 13th century, when the castles were built, was an important trade route under the castle hill and the owners of the two castles could secure this and at the same time control. In the 16th century lost this way in importance and the two castles were abandoned. The already ruined ruin was awakened from its slumber only with the advent of tourism in the late 19th century. Rehabilitation works were interrupted by the Second World War. After the war, the castle was located in the border area and the GDR leadership had it fenced. Thus, a unique biotope could develop on the silent castle ruins. When the castle was to be rebuilt after the fall, it was partly due to rare animal and plant species under protection.

Today the castle can be visited and in the castle museum you can immerse yourself completely in the history of the castle and the Middle Ages. The castle ruins are open every day of the year.

Opening hours Museum:
April until the end of September
Sundays and holidays 11am to 5pm

The Brandenburg Castle ruins tower impressively above the Werra Valley. We saw them several times from the Werra Castle Trail and eventually visited them. The view from up here is magnificent!

February 17, 2023, Tannenburg

The castle on the Tannenberg was built by the von Baumbach family in the 14th century in a strategically important location - first between Franconia and Saxony, then between Hesse and Thuringia - with the support of the Landgrave of Hesse in place of an older castle complex. The castle benefited from its location on the various trade routes, especially the Via Regia. A large part of the old core castle and the old farm yard are still preserved today. After excavations, the western kennel wall and the gate tower were reconstructed in 2006/7. The castle is now owned by the “Freunde des Tannenbergs e.V.” association. The former medieval group "Allerley" looks after the Tannenburg gastronomically, through demonstrations of old crafts and through a variety of events in the style of a living medieval museum. The inner courtyard is well worth seeing with the Palas, the cistern, its half-timbered buildings and the medieval castle garden. Everything is renovated and beautifully prepared.
