Dunsop Bridge – Centre of the United Kingdom

Highlight • Settlement

Officially the village closest to the centre of the British Isles as certified by Ordnance Survey.
It's a pretty little village with a cafe and a pub. It's on the Ribble Valley Jubilee Trail and a good start point for several walks.

Trough of Bowland Pass

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Can approach from the east or west. Coming from Dunsop Bridge (east) involves climbing up a steep hill towards the final part (Boundary Hill) which is 13% average with kicker in excess of 20%, so those who are less fit should approach from the west and why not give your legs a break by visiting Puddleducks Café at Dunsop Bridge. The 'trough' is a good scenic highlight, popular with cyclists and worth a trip out to.

Cross of Greet Climb from Slaidburn

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Possibly our favourite climb in the Cold Dark North - beautiful bathed in sunshine brutal on a wet and windy day - it's never very steep but always testing and rewards you with a brilliant descent down to Tatham Fell and Bentham to the North

Downham Village

Highlight • Pub

Amazing little village with excellent pub (Assheton Arms). The entire village has been owned by one family since 1558 so every property is rented. No satellite dishes are permitted, overhead cables or road signs. There isn’t even a village sign. Was the village where they filmed Whistle Down the Wind.

Undeniably one of the best gravel tracks I've ever ridden in the UK (or anywhere for that matter. Despite being relatively close to cities and villages, this feels a million miles from anywhere.

Watch out for puddles even in the summer, you're probably going to get your feet wet.

There's also signs up here for the Lancashire Witches Walk.

August 8, 2025, Dunsop Bridge – Centre of the United Kingdom

This is marked as an intermediate walk which, in the main is accurate. The walk starts with a steep incline, well covered in the walk description. What is less documented is the subsequent decent which can be challenging for the novice/ intermediate walker. The path down is narrow and the potential fall severe. Please be aware. Other than that, the walk offers wonderful views after the initial climb and relatively sedate walk after decent.

Large rocks anda terrible ride unless you’re on an MTB, this isn’t fun if you really ride gravel and aren’t on a Leccy bike. Be warned, maybe someone has decided to add shale and rocks to make it un rideable.

The actual centre of the British Isles is roughly 4 miles from the village but it is a pretty village to visit on the banks of the River Hodder.

🌿 The village is a gateway to stunning routes like the Trough of Bowland, Whin Fell, and along the River Dunsop. It’s perfect for peaceful countryside walks 📍 A phone box in the village marks the “exact center” of the United Kingdom, as determined by the Ordnance Survey. ☕ Puddleducks Café is great to grab a coffee and/or cakes at the start or end of your walk 🦌 The area is rich in wildlife, including deer, birds of prey, and rare wading birds, making it great for nature lovers. 🚴‍♂️ Also great pit-stop for cyclists heading through the Forest of Bowland’s quiet lanes and rolling hills

April 2024 - The road from Dunsop Bridge to Slaidburn is in a quite bad state, with big potholes. Okay if you're on your own, and alert, but potentially dangerous for a group riding at pace.
