The church is situated on a square that lies below sea level. It used to be regularly flooded and renovated by the locals. Currently, it is protected by a breakwater with a promenade.

The Prazeres - Jardim do Mar trail is (as of Spring 2026) officially closed, but you can get through. However, it is partly overgrown and slippery (after rain, water sometimes flowed down like a little stream). Good footwear required.

Madeira generally offers a mild climate year-round, making it suitable for cycling in most seasons. However, due to the significant elevation changes, weather conditions can vary greatly between coastal areas and higher altitudes. It's always advisable to check the local forecast for your specific route and elevation before heading out.
Given the challenging and mountainous terrain, a road bike with good climbing gears is highly recommended. Essential gear includes a helmet, appropriate cycling apparel for varying temperatures, sufficient water and nutrition, and a repair kit. Due to potential weather changes at higher elevations, layers of clothing are also advisable.
While specific crowd levels can vary, exploring routes that venture further inland or away from the most popular tourist spots might offer a quieter experience. Routes like the Fanal Laurisilva Forest – Boca da Encumeada Pass loop from Calheta, while challenging, traverse more remote and forested areas.
