Near Fort Hill, the trail meanders through the Red Marple Swamp wetland in a circular route, with one section on a wooden boardwalk. https://www.nps.gov/caco/planyourvisit/red-maple-swamp-trail.htm Historically, the area was a natural, low-lying swamp that supported only a few species, such as the hardy red maple. In the 20th century, the swamp was drained to control mosquitoes. Over the years, dry conditions caused the understory vegetation to thicken and prevent the growth of young red maple trees. In several pilot areas, the understory vegetation was removed to give the red maple better opportunities to grow.

Skiff Hill is the site of a 20-ton granite boulder that was used by Native Americans to sharpen tools. The boulder was moved from its original location in the marsh to the hill in 1965. The site is now underwater.

Nickerson State Park is a great 1,900 acre natural area with a host of hiking, running and biking trails. It is a beautiful wooded area and there are plenty of different routes to go and explore the multitude of scenic ponds in the area. You can enter the park here on your bike but if you have a car you will have to go to the main entrance just off the Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT). From here you have good access to the park trails.
