Coast Guard Beach - Where the Trail Suddenly Becomes Quiet As a mountain biker, I love trails that wind their way through the landscape, climbs that make you feel every mile, and that special moment when you stop after a long ride and simply take in the view. Coast Guard Beach is exactly that kind of place. There’s no summit to conquer and no steep downhill to get your heart racing. And yet, the landscape still manages to take your breath away. The Atlantic wind, the sound of the waves, the endless dunes, and the beach grass moving gently in the breeze. Everything feels wide open and peaceful, yet full of life. You stand there looking out across the ocean and suddenly speed, miles, and elevation don’t seem quite so important anymore. Maybe that’s exactly why I love places like this. For me, mountain biking has never been about getting somewhere as fast as possible. It’s about experiencing the landscape, feeling the wind, and discovering places that make you want to stay just a little longer. Coast Guard Beach is one of those places. A place you don’t simply see, but somehow carry with you.

Coast Guard Beach is located in Eastham, Massachusetts, and is one of Cape Cod National Seashore’s most popular destinations. Known for its stunning views and expansive sandy shores, it is a favorite among locals and visitors for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching and explore the nearby Nauset Marsh Trail. During the summer, shuttle services provide access from the Salt Marsh Visitor Center due to limited parking.

Coast Guard Beach is a popular swimming beach during the summer season. Further south along the coast is Nauset Spit, where the ocean water flows into the Nauset Marsh during the tides. This is where writer Henry Beston lived in a beach house when he wrote The Outermost House in 1928. The book describes life on the beach in detail during the four seasons. https://www.nps.gov/caco/planyourvisit/coast-guard-beach-eastham.htm

The new Mitchell River Drawbridge was completed in 2016. The previous historic drawbridge was one of the wooden bridges that have spanned Mill Pond and its access to Stage Harbor and the bay to the sea for more than 150 years. The bridge is considered the last remaining wooden drawbridge in the United States and has been listed for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

Hinckleys Pond is also known as Pleasant Lake and is classified as a Great Pond due to its 172-acre size. It has a well-maintained beach with plenty of activities. The Cape Cod Rail Trail passes nearby, which is a super byway. This is a great place to take a break, especially as nearby you have Pleasant Lake Pizza Shark, a well-known local eatery.

The Chatham Light and Chatham Light Beach are on the "elbow" of Cape Cod and are an iconic part of the area. The lighthouse is still in operation by the U.S. Coast Guard station, where Search and Rescue, maritime law enforcement, and Homeland Security missions are carried out from here. From the road you can see both the lighthouse and the beach, where there are often seals (and occasionally sharks!) swimming in the water.
