June 21, 2026, Church of St. Michael (Chiesa di San Michele), Riva del Garda

The church of San Giovanni, founded a very long time ago, is today hidden, with its facade facing the opposite side of the street. In a 12th-century document, it is mentioned as "Madonna di San Michele" or "Sancta Maria a miraculis" and is located in an area that, although described as being outside the city walls, its name - Riva vecla - suggests that it was very centrally located in the original urban area. Important public acts took place in the building during the Middle Ages, and thanks to numerous legacies, its wealth and importance grew, as did the brotherhood named after it, which cared for the sick, the dying, and intercessions. In 1303, Frate Dolcino, a heretical preacher who found some followers in the Basso-Sarca region, stayed there. He was tried between 1333 and 1334 in the convent of San Francesco in Riva and finally ended up on the pyre. Already at the end of the 18th century, the building was in an extremely poor condition and was to be demolished. It was only after the Second World War that the Associazione Nazionale Alpini freed it from the ravages of time and restored it.

The Palazzo del Municipio on Piazza Tre Novembre in Riva del Garda shows, with its architectural style and arcades, that the building was constructed under the influence of Tyrol. The city belonged to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy for a long time.
