December 20, 2024, Sunset Trail #90

This lovely trail offers varied terrain and views of oaks and the Tucson Basin as it drops in to Sabino Canyon. There are some rocky areas in this trail that require good footing and some very light scrambling. The trailhead for Sunset Trail sits right off the Santa Catalina Highway, across from the Butterfly Trailhead. The parking is free here and the first mile or so of trail runs through a road with some cabins, but there is signage indicating where the trail is, so it's easy to stay on course. Eventually the trail hits a creek crossing at the bottom of the canyon and merges with Marshall Gulch Trailhead, where you can continue for a longer hike, or turn around.

December 19, 2024, Aspen Draw

The Aspen Draw Trail offers a moderately challenging 1.9-mile uphill hike, ending in a really nice viewpoint along the ridge. Dogs are welcome but should be leashed. Keep in mind that this trail is also a popular downhill mountain biking route, so keep your eyes open on the trail as you hike!

This trailhead to the Aspen Draw Trail sits at the end of East Turkey Run Road and has limited roadside parking. Visitors here are reminded to not block gates and driveways, as there are residences and private property next to the trailhead. If parking is full here, you can find parking further up the road near Summerhaven and walk to the trailhead.

Riding the dirt backside of Mount Lemmon is a local's favorite. It is often closed to vehicles and feels vey remote. It gets really steep at the top-- best on a mountain bike, but manageable on a gravel bike too.

Beautiful views to the north from Mt. Lemmon and East Ski Run Road. The road is usually open from April through December.
