Lemmon Rock Lookout Tower was built in 1928 and is the oldest fire lookout tower still in use in the forest. Like all lookout towers around the country Lemmon Rock Lookout Tower offers incredible views of the entire area and is definitely worth the trip!

Yes, the region offers several options suitable for families and beginners. A great choice is the Sabino Creek – Marshall Gulch Trailhead loop from Catalina. It's a relatively flat and short walk that follows the creek, making it enjoyable for all ages. The high-elevation pine forests provide plenty of shade.
Summerhaven is a year-round hiking destination, but each season offers a different experience. Summer provides a cool escape from the Tucson heat, with temperatures often 30 degrees cooler. Autumn is spectacular for fall colors, especially in the aspen groves. Spring brings pleasant weather, while winter can see snow, requiring appropriate gear like microspikes for icy trails.
Yes, dogs are generally permitted on the trails within the Coronado National Forest around Summerhaven, but they must be kept on a leash. Always check specific trailhead regulations, bring enough water for your pet, and be mindful of wildlife.
Due to the high elevation and potential for rapid weather changes, it's important to be prepared. Essentials include:
Layers of clothing: Even on a warm day, it can be cool and windy.
Plenty of water: The high altitude and dry air can lead to dehydration quickly.
Sun protection: Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are crucial at this elevation.
Sturdy hiking shoes: Trails can be rocky and uneven.
Snacks: To maintain your energy levels.
A map or GPS device: Cell service can be unreliable in the mountains.
For a strenuous and rewarding trek, consider the Mount Lemmon Trail to Wilderness of Rocks Trail loop. This nearly 10-mile hike involves significant elevation gain and takes you through a unique landscape of fascinating rock formations, offering a true backcountry experience.
Many trailheads and picnic areas, such as the popular Marshall Gulch Picnic Area, are part of the Mount Lemmon Recreation Area and require a fee. You can typically purchase a day pass or use an annual pass. Some trailheads, like the Mount Lemmon Trailhead Entrance, may have free parking available along the road, but paid lots are also common. It's best to arrive with cash or have your pass ready.
While the area is not primarily known for large, year-round waterfalls, you can find seasonal water flows and cascades, especially after monsoon rains in the summer or during the spring snowmelt. Trails that follow creeks, such as those in Marshall Gulch, are your best bet for seeing running water.
The key difference is the dramatic change in environment. Summerhaven is a 'sky island' at over 8,000 feet, offering a cool, alpine setting with pine and aspen forests. This is a stark contrast to the saguaro-studded desert landscape of Tucson's lower elevations. You can experience this transition firsthand on longer trails that ascend the mountain.
A great option for a moderate hike is the Meadow Trail & Lemmon Rock Fire Lookout loop. This route is under 2.5 miles but includes some steady climbing to the historic fire lookout, rewarding you with fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community. Reviewers frequently praise the cool mountain air, the beautiful aspen groves, and the well-maintained trail network. The dramatic scenery and the feeling of being in a completely different world from the desert below are consistent highlights.
Several trailheads are local favorites. The Marshall Gulch Picnic Area is a very popular starting point with access to multiple trails and restroom facilities. The Mount Lemmon Trailhead Entrance is another key access point for several routes. For a potentially quieter start, you might explore the Upper Green Mountain Trailhead.
There are over 20 designated hiking routes to explore around Summerhaven on komoot. These range from short, easy walks perfect for an afternoon stroll to challenging all-day treks, covering a wide variety of terrain and difficulty levels.
