Tinside Lido

Highlight • Rest Area

From this spot, Francis Drake (1540-1596) is said to have seen the invincible Spanish Armada coming in 1588, but nevertheless decided to finish his ball game before going into battle. It is more likely that he has been waiting for the tide to turn. What is certain is that this place offers an ideal view of the shipping traffic in the Sound, the natural harbor at the mouth of the Tamar and the Plym

Radford Park is a beautiful green space on the edge of Plymstock with a rich history. A grand Elizabethan property stood in the park originally, Radford House, owned by the Harris family for over 500 years. Hosting parties attended by figures such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake, this was quite the place to be seen.

Demolished in the late 1930s after falling into disrepair, only the grounds remain. The park is free to walk around and offers many interesting sights and viewpoints including over Hooe Lake.

The 19th-century castle is a particularly pretty sight and marks the end of the West Devon Way.

Fantastic Art Deco building from 1935 which was renovated a few years ago and is now used by 800 visitors/day in the season. Very worth seeing with many preserved details. The pool is filled with seawater, which is changed every 4 hours. The length of the swimming lane is a very proud 55 meters.

In addition to the memorial on the stairway by which Mayflower passengers embarked in 1620 are various other plaques, including a memorial stone commemorating a visit from Queen Elizabeth II in the form of a crown.

The Mayflower Steps are a landmark in Plymouth's Barbican Quarter. They mark the place where the Pilgrim Fathers boarded the Mayflower in 1620 before crossing the Atlantic to settle in North America. The traditional place of their disembarkation in North America is Plymouth Rock. The Mayflower Steps consist of a portico with Doric columns of Portland stone that was built in 1934, and a small platform over the water with a steel railing and a shelf with bronze artwork and historical information. It is on a small pier which was probably built in the 18th or 19th century when some of the old houses blocking the construction of a road around the sea front from the Royal Citadel to Plymouth Hoe were demolished along with the important Guard House.
