At the edge of the caldera, at an altitude of approximately 2,400 meters, a number of telescopes are lined up at Roque de los Muchachos: optical and infrared night-vision telescopes, solar telescopes, and instruments for high-energy astrophysics. We took part in a guided tour and highly recommend it. It's essential to book online in advance from home; spontaneous bookings on-site are usually not possible. The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) boasts an impressive and photogenic telescope array. Over 20 telescopes are set up here, exploring the universe. The ORM is one of the largest observatories in the world. Nowhere else will you feel so close to the stars.

It currently looks very neglected.

From the summit of Pico de la Cruz, there's a beautiful view that's well worth every effort! You won't be at the summit long before the summit lords come looking to see if they can find anything. In any case, I consider a visit to the summit a must.

The La Zarzita circular trail, featuring the petroglyphs and the Guanche spring, has been permanently closed since the end of 2023 following several landslides. A decision will only be made once it's clear whether restoration is possible and financially viable. A timeline isn't foreseeable. As a result, the visitor center and its parking lot were also closed, as it's pointless to operate an information center for something that can no longer be visited. There are no plans to reopen this area in the foreseeable future, either. A real shame!

Geologically speaking, this is an extremely fascinating erosion crater, whose 2 million-year-old volcanic history is evident in its spectacular steep slopes. Inside the 9-kilometer-diameter crater lies the famous national park of the same name, which offers beautiful hiking trails.

Magnificent view, 2,366 meters above sea level - the second highest point on La Palma after the Roque de los Muchachos.
