At the edge of the caldera, at an altitude of approximately 2,400 meters, a number of telescopes are lined up at Roque de los Muchachos: optical and infrared night-vision telescopes, solar telescopes, and instruments for high-energy astrophysics. We took part in a guided tour and highly recommend it. It's essential to book online in advance from home; spontaneous bookings on-site are usually not possible. The many dragon trees are at least as impressive as those in Las Tritias.

A beautiful detour that is absolutely worth taking if you find yourself visiting the north of the island of La Palma, the road climbs up into a mountainous area surrounded by vegetation and, often, runs along high volcanic rock cliffs from below that inspire a certain fear ; furthermore, along its route there are old and picturesque tunnels dug into the rock which are not illuminated.

The Mercadillo, Puntagorda's small farmers' market, takes place on Saturdays and Sundays. The products of the area are on offer: honey from chestnuts and avocados - highly recommended - all types of vegetables fresh from the field, delicious baked goods, including pretzels, wine from La Palma, pickled olives, cakes, typical Palmerian almond pastries, goat cheese, also smoked ... super tasty, plus the island's typical mojo in different variations with potatoes... an inexpensive and delicious meal, quickly prepared, and above all, authentically Palmerian! …. and if you want to try a refreshing drink after a hike that is not available in Germany: sugar cane juice... of course there is also meat. A department offers handicrafts from artists and craftsmen in the area, leather goods, woodwork, pictures… If you're lucky, you can see musicians or artists in front of the market hall performing their art in exchange for a few small, appreciative coins. Mostly a nice atmosphere in and around the market hall. A restaurant is planned in the immediate vicinity; the shell will be finished in 2024... but it may still be a while before the opening.

For an even greater challenge, a 127km journey across La Palma runs from north to south, including a demanding 15km ascent to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.
Cyclists can enjoy several significant landmarks and viewpoints. The Roque de los Muchachos offers unparalleled views and is home to an astrophysical observatory. Yes, Garafía offers several circular touring cycling routes. An example is the El Time Viewpoint – Barranco de Garome Viewpoint loop from El Roque, which covers 34.5 km. Another option is the Las Mimbreras Tunnels – Natural Spring Fountain loop from Garafía, a 46.9 km route.
La Palma generally enjoys a mild climate year-round, making touring cycling possible in most seasons. However, for optimal conditions, spring and autumn often provide pleasant temperatures and less extreme weather. Always check local weather forecasts, especially when planning ascents to higher elevations like Roque de los Muchachos, where conditions can change rapidly.
While Garafía's touring cycling routes are predominantly rated as difficult due to significant elevation changes, some sections or shorter loops might be suitable for families with older, more experienced children. It's advisable to review the route profiles carefully for elevation and distance to ensure they match your family's cycling ability.
The touring cycling routes in Garafía are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.8 stars from over 30 reviews. Cyclists frequently praise the incredible landscape diversity, the challenging ascents to stunning viewpoints like Roque de los Muchachos, and the unique experience of traversing Canarian pine forests and volcanic terrains.
