• Before the cataclysm, the pier in Garachico served powerful merchant ships sailing from Europe to South America. It was from here that the world-famous, strong Malvasia wine (which Shakespeare himself admired) and cane sugar were exported. It all ended on May 5, 1706, when streams of molten lava from the Trevejo volcano flowed directly into the port basin. In a few hours, the magma completely filled and shallowed the seabed, irrevocably destroying the infrastructure and ending the era of the town's commercial power.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Garachico was the most important and wealthiest trading port in Tenerife, from which the famous Malvasia wine and cane sugar were massively exported. Everything changed on the night of May 5, 1706, when the eruption of the Trevejo volcano (Montaña Negra) sent lava flows that streamed directly through the town and completely buried the former port.

A central and very beautiful square in Garachico. It features stunning historic buildings. The square itself invites visitors to linger with its many benches under large trees and a pavilion serving refreshments.

Castillo de San Miguel was built in the 16th century to protect the flourishing port, then the largest on the north coast, from pirates. Although the volcanic eruption of 1706 almost destroyed the town, the fortress survived the eruption largely unscathed. Today it houses a small museum about the town's history.
