St. Pankratius Church, Paffendorf

Highlight • Religious Site

The church was built around 900. In the 11th century it was enlarged in the Romanesque style. By the year 1507 the nave had been extended in the late Gothic style. In 1746 the village and the church were badly damaged in a fire. However, frescoes from the end of the 15th century have been preserved in the choir of the church.

Ancient Trees in Paffendorf Castle Park

Highlight • Natural Monument

The 7.5 hectare castle park, designed as a landscape garden, is home to around 180 different types of shrubs and trees, including old sequoias, ginkgoes and plane trees. A forest teaching garden gives an impression of the flora of the Tertiary.
Descendants of primeval trees, bushes and moor plants from other parts of the world provide visitors with a living picture of the Tertiary in the truest sense of the word.
Two 15-million-year-old sequoia stumps flank the entrance to the castle park as remnants of primeval flora. Their high natural tannic acid content prevented decomposition for millions of years, so that they could be found in an open pit mine in good condition.
