Cycling

The church was built around 900. In the 11th century it was enlarged in the Romanesque style. By the year 1507 the nave had been extended in the late Gothic style. In 1746 the village and the church were badly damaged in a fire. However, frescoes from the end of the 15th century have been preserved in the choir of the church.

According to tradition, at the end of the 3rd / beginning of the 4th century under Emperor Diocletian, Saint Pankratius, to whom the church in the Bergheim district of Paffendorf is consecrated, was publicly executed for his Christian faith. The body of the martyr was buried on the Roman Via Aurelia - in the catacombs later named after him - under today's church "San Pancrazio". His feast day is on May 12th, he is one of the three so-called "ice saints" in popular piety, together with Servatius and Bonifatius (in some areas supplemented by "Cold Sophie" one day later).
