Durbuy Bridge - 1725

Highlight • Bridge

In the 14th century, Durbuy had its small wooden bridge. This was replaced by a stone bridge in 1725, donated by Sisters Recollectinen. Next door, on the left bank, stood a mill.
The bridge and the mill disappear in 1909. A new, wider bridge is built, but it is destroyed in 1940 by the Belgian army.
The current bridge dates from 1954. Three construction dates are engraved on the bronze cross in the middle of the bridge.

Homalius Rock and Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

At approximately 37 meters, the summit of the Homalius Rock, better known as the Falize Rock or Anticline, is literally the highest point in Durbuy. It has been a highlight for many visitors for years, thanks in part to the surroundings and beautiful water features.

The rock is somewhat older than the average visitor. It's said to be more than 300 million years old. However, the rock layers are much older: around 375 million years old.

The name Anticline comes from the geological phenomenon known as an anticline. It's the opposite of a syncline. While the former is a fold formed over many years, with the innermost layers being the oldest and the folds running downwards, synclines have folds running downwards.

Such folds can form for various reasons and range from very small to large, as seen here. Originally, everything was, of course, horizontal. The inverted U-shape created by uplift in Durbuy is not only beautiful to see but also special. And Durbuy has beautifully highlighted this. Another beautiful anticline can be found in Han-sur-Lesse, also in the Famenne-Ardenne region, albeit in the province of Namur (here we are in Luxembourg), where it has been given the name "Tête de bouc" (Tête de bouc).

There's a waterfall and a large water feature at the end of the expansive pond in front of the rock, which you can also climb. And there's plenty of room to admire it all. Don't forget the many smaller works of art and curiosities, and take a look in the water.

Along the Ourthe River

Highlight (Segment) • River

A path (segment) on the right bank of the Ourthe. The section delineated here begins at the end of the first large parking lot and runs parallel to the Ourthe on one side and the main road on the other. Between them, however, is a sometimes relatively wide grassy area with beautiful plants and a few artworks, as well as information boards about a "water walk" ("Durbuy au fil de l'eau") and, of course, seating (or simply relax on the grass). It ends (if you're coming from the parking lot) just past the bend in the path at the entrance to Durbuy, with a beautiful view of the Ourthe from the pedestrian bridge. Beautiful and peaceful except on peak days. Walking along the busy road is, of course, less interesting, even though there's a path running alongside it.

Durbuy — Old Town and Castle

Highlight • Settlement

Nicknamed "the smallest town in the world", Durbuy is an open-air history book, illustrated by numerous buildings from all eras. A small town with medieval alleys where it is good to stroll.

Récollets Street

Highlight • Historical Site

The Rue des Récollets runs from the castle and the church towards the Anticline (and vice versa). The most important feature of this street is that it still houses an original section of the former monastery of the Franciscan Recollects (Friaries Minor) and some later parts of the complex.

The Récollets (and Récollectines) arrived in Durbuy at the instigation of the Antwerp-born military commander Antonie Schetz, Baron van Grobbendonck, who served the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War and leased the Durbuy estate and castle in 1628 for 40,000 gold marks, as you can read at komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/7336847

The monastery was founded in 1625, damaged during the French Revolution, and closed by the French. The monastery church was transferred to the small town in 1809 because the parish church had been destroyed.

The monastery was subsequently used as a gendarmerie and town hall, a school, a justice of the peace court, a prison, a tax office, and partly as an orphanage (after renovation). In 1861, it finally returned to religious use, and the Daughters of Wisdom settled there. Later, a school was also established there for a short time.
The only remnants of the original building are the rectory and the wing that runs parallel to the church. The wing facing Rue des Récollets, which was naturally named after the order of the Franciscan Recollects (the Récollets or Ordo Fratrum Minorum Recollectorum), was built in the 18th century and renovated in the following century.

Part of it is now used for—naturally—tourism purposes. And the church is still the church.

Durbuy Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

A beautiful, rocky old town, with pretty shops, pubs, alleys and cobblestones. You just have to take your time here and stroll through the alleys with your eyes open. I was totally blown away 🥰
I prefer such pretty small towns to any big city in the world. 🤗

Durbuy Castle

Highlight • Castle

Durbuy got its first fortified castle around 899. A century later it was destroyed and in the 11th century Henri the 1st of Namur, Count of Durbuy had the castle rebuilt. The d'Ursel family became the owner of the castle in 1756. This beautiful building is located along the Ourthe, near the old bridge of the city.
