Durbuy got its first fortified castle around 899. A century later it was destroyed and in the 11th century Henri the 1st of Namur, Count of Durbuy had the castle rebuilt. The d'Ursel family became the owner of the castle in 1756. This beautiful building is located along the Ourthe, near the old bridge of the city.

Durbuy is often promoted as "the smallest city in the world": this tourist slogan refers to a charter of franchises granted by King John of Bohemia, Count of Luxembourg, who in 1331 gave the city status to the city on the banks of the Ourthe. The old town of Durbuy itself still has only about 400 inhabitants today. However, the smallest city in the world is Hum, in Croatia, with about 30 inhabitants.

In 1731 Durbuy Castle was rebuilt on the ruins of the old castle. The current building is the result of a reconstruction from the 18th century and a major restoration between 1880 and 1882 by the Countess d’Ursel, whose family has owned the castle from 1756 until today.
