For over a century, there was talk of building a bridge here, but it didn't arrive until 1971. Before that, locals crossed the Kyle on a small passenger ferry, and when that disappeared, you had to take the narrow road that went all the way around the loch.
Today it seems like just a road over the water, but in reality, you travel along a roadway of almost 4 km, partly supported by the small island of Eilean Thunga, until you reach the 183-meter bridge.
