Part of the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Tennyson Down offers you gentle hikes with endlessly wonderful views. You’ll find this downland area in the far west, rising whale-backed to look over the stunning Needles sea stacks, gleaming chalk white in the sunshine.

This iconic Isle of Wight hill is named after the poet, Lord Tennyson, who lived nearby and loved strolling the grassy ridge. Hike to Tennyson Down’s highest point at 482 ft (147 m) for scrape-your-jaw-off-the-ground views across the Solent, Poole Bay and back over the beautiful curves of the island.

Exploring rolling downland

Hiking trails to Tennyson Down and its proud granite cross monument lead you over the exposed, grassy ridge and you’ll find the walking easy and family-friendly. If it’s a clear day with little haze, you can spot Portland Bill and the Old Harry Rocks on the western horizon. The down itself is around three miles long (five km), providing an easy stroll on a sunny day.

As the Isle of Wight is at its narrowest here, you can not only marvel at both the Solent and the English Channel, but you can explore both sides too. To the east, Freshwater Bay is a haven of paddling and ice creams. To the north west, relax on the beach at Totland.

Mild in winter and warm in summer, hiking along Tennyson Down is a year-round activity and you’ll find several campsites close by.
