The St. Charles Avenue line, is the oldest continuously operating street railway system in the world. It starts at the corner of St. Charles and Common Street and runs through the Garden District all the way to Claiborne Ave. and return. Fare is $1.25 each way. The cars are historic and with their open windows allow an intimate tour of the city. The cars stop only on request - pull the line, if you want to step out.

You will walk along the Mississippi River, taking in views of steamboats and the bustling waterfront. The route then guides you through iconic Jackson Square, where you can admire St. Louis Cathedral and the surrounding historic architecture with its distinctive wrought iron balconies. This 3.9-mile (6.2 km) loop is notably flat, with only 13 feet (4 metres) of elevation gain, making it a relaxed journey. Allow about 1 hour and 33 minutes to soak in the lively atmosphere, street performers, and local artists.

This urban route is easily accessible, whether you arrive by public transportation or find parking within the French Quarter. The path is entirely paved and flat, making it suitable for all fitness levels, including those with wheelchairs or strollers. You won't need any special permits or have to pay fees to enjoy this walk. Consider starting your hike in the morning to experience the Quarter before it gets too crowded, or in the late afternoon to catch the evening's energy.

The French Quarter is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans, founded in 1718, and its unique blend of French, Spanish, and Creole influences is evident in every street. This hike offers a direct immersion into the city's rich past and present, showcasing its architectural heritage and dynamic street life.
