Connecting Èze-sur-Mer to the perched village of Èze, the Nietzsche Path climbs over 400 meters in elevation through cliffs and Mediterranean scrubland. Its name pays homage to Friedrich Nietzsche, who regularly walked this path during his stays on the French Riviera. It is here, according to local tradition, that he found inspiration for part of his major work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

From 1883 onwards, Friedrich Nietzsche stayed on the Côte d'Azur several times: while climbing the path from the sea coast to the "wonderful Moorish village of Èze, built in the middle of rocks", he wrote the third part of his work "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" .

Nietzsche was always drawn to the Mediterranean countries and long before Albert Camus he even spoke of a "Pensée de Midi" (Thought of the Midday).
The brightness and precision of the lines, which stand for a clear mind, are better for him than the northern mists of colder countries.
"Oh, these Greeks! They knew how to live: something for which it is necessary to bravely linger on the surface, the fold, the skin, to worship the appearance, to believe in forms, sounds, words, in the whole Olympus of appearance! These Greeks were superficial... out of depth".
