The figure represents the Norse god Loki, who is found in Christianity as one of the earliest symbols of the devil in human form, which is itself a northern concept and was spread across Europe by the Scandinavian peoples.
This Loki Stone is the only one of its kind in Britain and one of only two remaining in the whole of Europe.
