Karolinenplatz is a circular square in the Museum Quarter, created at the beginning of the 19th century as part of neoclassical urban planning. At its center stands the 29-meter-high obelisk, erected in 1833 at the request of King Ludwig I. It commemorates the 30,000 Bavarian soldiers who died in Napoleon's Russian campaign of 1812. The cast-iron obelisk is an important memorial to Bavarian history and lends Karolinenplatz its distinctive appearance as a historical memorial and transportation hub in Munich's city center.

Karolinenplatz lies between the royal square and Odeonsplatz, in the middle of which a black obelisk juts out from a green area decorated with flowers. The obelisk was erected in 1833 on the order of Louis I and commemorates the Bavarian soldiers who fell during Napoleon's 1812 Russian campaign. Here at the square is also the stock exchange Munich.
