Wolfhole Crag and Ward's Stone from 'The Trough' – Forest of Bowland

    490m

Embark on a challenging hike to Wolfhole Crag and Ward's Stone, two of the highest points in the Forest of Bowland. This difficult route covers 14.2 miles (22.8 km) with a significant elevation gain of 1594 feet (486 metres), typically taking around 6 hours and 50 minutes to complete. You'll navigate remote moorland, often boggy, and traverse rough, heathery ground, but your efforts will be rewarded with expansive views across northwest England, including the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. Look out for the distinctive gritstone formations on Wolfhole Crag, a highlight for both hikers and climbers.

Starting from "The Trough," a scenic valley sometimes called "the Switzerland of England," this trail demands very good fitness and sure-footedness. Be prepared for varied terrain, where paths can be indistinct, especially on the moorland sections to Wolfhole Crag and Ward's Stone. Trekking poles are highly recommended to help you navigate the challenging ground, particularly after wet weather when boggy conditions are common. Plan your visit for drier periods to make the most of this demanding but rewarding adventure.

This hike offers more than just physical challenge; it takes you to Ward's Stone, the highest point in the Forest of Bowland, and Wolfhole Crag, the third-highest summit. Wolfhole Crag is renowned as one of the UK's most remote gritstone outcrops, providing a uniquely isolated and tranquil hiking experience. The route also passes near the geographical center of the UK and offers panoramic vistas from both peaks, allowing you to see as far as Morecambe Bay and the iconic Three Peaks of the Yorkshire Dales. The starting point, "The Trough," also holds historical significance, having been part of the route taken by the Pendle witches in 1612.
