The Saint Gertrude Church of Gruitrode is dedicated to Saint Gertrude of Nivelles (626, Landen - March 17, 659, Nivelles). Gertrudis was born as the daughter of Pepijn van Landen, mayor of the palace to the kings of Austrasia. Her mother was Saint Ida of Nivelles and she is a sister of Saint Begga. In 640, her widowed mother founded the abbey of Nivelles, where Gertrude entered and became abbess at the age of 20. She lived in the greatest poverty and gave everything she had to the poor, widows and orphans.
