Lake Fondi is a brackish lake that forms naturally near the plain of Fondi. The basin is constantly filled with spring water that oozes from the base of the mountains. In addition to the streams from the springs, numerous channels have been built from the swamp regions below sea level to drain the water from the swamp into the lake. Pumping stations are needed to lift the water into the channels.
