It was most likely built at the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century. Around 1500 the castle is said to have belonged to the Zirckendorf family.
In 1683 the castle was probably devastated by Turkish raiders. However, according to tradition, the final decay was triggered by imperial soldiers who had stormed a robber's nest here. The castle building and the walls were then used by the surrounding population so thoroughly as a quarry for the construction of their houses that nothing was left except for the towers.
