After the capitulation of the Belgian army in May 1940, the German Luftwaffe took possession of Deurne airfield. To meet their needs, they expanded the airport and incorporated Fort 3.
As the war progressed, more Allied aircraft crashed in the region. Initially, the bodies of the crew members were buried in the nearest local graveyard. To the dismay of the German occupier, the local population honored these war graves. To prevent worship, the Germans set up a cemetery within the walls of Fort 3, “Not Accessible to the Public”.
