    Hiking

Virginia and Leonard Woolf's cottage is tiny and nestles in a small garden: a vegetable garden, a perennial garden, a small orchard and a croquet field with a wonderful view. Both of them wrote here - Virginia Woolf in her own room or in the summer in the small hut in the garden.

Embark on a moderate hike through the classic English countryside, where chalk hills meet rolling farmland. This 3.1-mile (5.1 km) circular route offers gentle views of the River Ouse, which you will follow for a stretch. You will gain 107 feet (33 metres) in elevation, making it a manageable outing that takes approximately 1 hour and 18 minutes to complete. The trail provides a peaceful atmosphere as you traverse varied terrain, including paths along the riverbanks. Look out for the historic Southease Bridge, an 1880 landmark, as you cross the water.

Before you set out, be aware that the paths on this route can get very muddy and waterlogged, particularly after rain or during the winter months. Appropriate footwear is essential to ensure a comfortable experience. If you plan to visit Monk's House, remember it is usually open from March to October, Wednesday to Sunday. For refreshments after your walk, the Abergavenny Arms pub in Rodmell is a convenient option.

This trail offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance within the South Downs National Park. It leads you directly to Monk's House in Rodmell, the former residence of the renowned author Virginia Woolf. This connection provides a fascinating glimpse into literary history, adding a cultural layer to your outdoor adventure. The route is an excellent choice for those seeking a gentle exploration of the area's heritage and landscapes.
