    Hiking

It's a shame they were devastated...years ago you could walk inside...and it was nice to enter the smallest inlets...hoping to find a fragment of a Bear...never happened.now you can climb on the external walls and cool off in the Gesso river

Embark on the Butterfly and Bandit's Caves Trail, a moderate hiking route that spans 6.7 miles (10.8 km) with an elevation gain of 603 feet (184 metres). You can expect to complete this journey in about 2 hours and 59 minutes, making it a rewarding experience for hikers with good fitness. As you hike, you will wind through shaded chestnut groves and open clearings, following the Gesso River and encountering the imposing limestone massif of Rocca San Giovanni-Saben. The trail offers a varied landscape, from riverside paths to more rugged sections leading to unique rock formations.

Before you head out, note that some parts of the trail may require sure-footedness, especially on the steeper uphill section. Parking is typically available near the trailhead in Valdieri, making access straightforward if you are driving. While the trail is generally accessible, it is always wise to check local conditions, especially regarding any seasonal changes that might affect your visit. Plan your start time to allow ample daylight for the duration of your hike, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience.

This route immerses you in the picturesque Valle Gesso, offering a glimpse into its natural beauty. A significant highlight is the area known for the Bandit's Caves, nestled within striking rock faces, which adds a historical and geological dimension to your hike. You will also discover the unique Sentiero delle Farfalle, or Butterfly Trail, located in a former quarry area. This section is known for being home to various rare butterflies, providing a special opportunity to observe local wildlife in a distinctive setting.
