The monument is reminiscent of the legend of El Pilú. The self-proclaimed missionary, when his speeches became offensive, was banned from the city by the Council in 1897. Before he boarded the boat, he cursed Baracoa with a curse that supposedly continues to this day. The most recent example of this was Hurricane Matthew, who hit the coast here on 4 October 2016 with wind speeds of 220 km / h and caused severe damage in the city.
