Carrouges Castle

Highlight • Castle

Seven centuries of history. Carrouges was first in the 14th century a stronghold of the Hundred Years War (dungeon). It became a stately home in the 15th century (Blosset wing), augmented in the 16th century by an entrance gatehouse considered to be the first witness to Renaissance architecture in Normandy. Once again fortified at the time of the Wars of Religion (western bastion), its function as a prestigious residence was confirmed by the construction at the end of the 16th century of two "classic" wings and the stairs which serve them by the architect François Gabriel.

Famous hosts. The Lords of Carrouges received King Louis XI in 1473 then Catherine de Medici and her retinue in 1570.

The chapel of Notre-Dame de Lourdes, known as the Calvary, was built in 1860 in white stone.

Nevertheless, the building would currently need a restoration to find all its splendor.

Carrefour du Chêne au Verdier

Highlight • Monument

Remarkable crossroads of the Ecouves forest with its sculpted giant sequoia.
The latter, victim of lightning, was condemned to disappear.
It was decided to give it a second life, in the form of a totem this time!
The carvings represent a ranger, an owl and an eagle,
guardians of the forest.

Perhaps the small botanical problem only exists in the German translation that the komoot system displays via Google, but: The highlight name refers to an "oak," but the text then refers to a "mammoth tree." But aside from this minor linguistic confusion, a beautiful carving can be found at this point in the forest.

Riding up there by bike was quite strenuous, but the view from the top was worth the effort. It was well worth it.

At this central location in the forest—where six streets converge to form an open space—the brightly lit small sacred monument rises above a slab and a small stone base. The simply crafted wooden cross (without a body) bearing the name "La Croix Madame" is painted white, forming a radiant centerpiece in the middle of the forest.

Very beautiful castle. The outside area is very interesting and a nice walk. Unfortunately I didn't see the inside of the castle. The bicycle parking area is behind the archway on the inside on the right.
