Whether summer or winter, this Ganghofer circular trail has its own special charm in every season. Sometimes it's dark fir trees, then again bright deciduous trees, that line the quiet path on both sides. On the "Ludwig Ganghofer Lausbubenweg" (Ludwig Ganghofer Rascal Trail), you can re-experience the pranks of the young Ludwig Ganghofer. Five adventure stations guide families through chapters of his childhood and youth novel "Lebens lauf eines Optimisten" (Life Story of an Optimist). On the 3.5 km circular route, little forest explorers can dig for treasure in the sand or explore the forest from the observation tower high above the ground. Incidentally, you hike and learn interesting facts about the forest – and about Ludwig Ganghofer's childhood in Welden.

This forest service hut was built by the royal district forester August Ritter von Ganghofer. It serves the forest personnel as a work and meeting room, as well as a shelter, and for hunting guests as a meeting and support point.

The interior is cozy and definitely invites you to linger for a while. If you walk about 400 meters further on the Hörgrabenweg and follow the first forest path leading left slightly uphill, you will reach the August-Ganghofer-Hütte. Pinecone target shooting on Nepomuk's nose Have fun with the target throwing: Hit the "Sparrow's Nest" with the pinecones! The game: Visitors pick up pinecones or spruce cones from the forest floor and try to hit a hole (the so-called "Sparrow's Nest") under the arm or directly the nose of the wooden figure of the bridge saint Nepomuk. The background: The station is part of a child-friendly adventure trail that playfully recalls the childhood of the homeland writer Ludwig Ganghofer, who grew up in Welden for a few years.

From 1879, he managed the Royal Bavarian Forestry Administration and initiated the founding of the Bavarian State Institute for Forestry and Forest Management (LWF) in Freising in 1881. Career: From 1859 to 1873, he managed the forestry district in Welden, where he had the August Ganghofer Avenue, named after him today, planted. He was elevated to the personal nobility in 1887. Works: His standard work "Der praktische Holzrechner" (The Practical Wood Calculator) was published in 1872 and went through seven editions. Memorial Site: In Welden stands the August-Ganghofer-Hütte, the former forester's official hut, which is now part of the Ludwig-Ganghofer-Rundwanderweg (Ludwig Ganghofer Circular Hiking Trail).

The quaint building is the old service cabin of August Ganghofer, the father of the writer Ludwig Ganghofer. It represents the family's forestry background and the forest that strongly influenced Ludwig's childhood. August Ganghofer was not only the district forester in Welden, but later pursued a career as a forestry expert.
