Embark on a moderate hike to Pierce's Castle from Sandbank Road, a 4.0-mile (6.5 km) route that takes about 2 hours and 3 minutes to complete. You will gain 892 feet (272 metres) in elevation as you traverse the rolling hills and heathland characteristic of the Low Mournes. The highlight is the distinctive granite outcrop of Pierce's Castle itself, offering expansive 360-degree panoramic views from its summit.

When planning your visit, the trail typically starts near the Leitrim Lodge car park on Sandbank Road, providing convenient access. While the path is generally clear, be aware that some sections in the Western Mournes can be marshy, especially after rain. The descent from Pierce's Castle also features steep parts, so good footwear is highly recommended for your comfort and safety.

From the top of Pierce's Castle, you can often spot other prominent Mourne peaks like Shanlieve and Rocky Mountain on a clear day. Your gaze might even extend as far as Slieve Foye in County Louth, showcasing the broad reach of the views. This trail offers a rewarding experience for most skill levels, making it a popular choice for exploring the Western Mournes.

The well-signposted mountain bike trails take you through dense forests and offer breathtaking views of Carlingford Lough and the Mourne Mountains. The descent from the Cloughmore Stone, a huge boulder that was transported here during the last ice age, is a particular highlight. However, some sections are technical and require a certain level of riding technique. The trails can become slippery in wet weather, so caution is advised. Another plus point is the proximity to the charming village of Rostrevor, where you can relax in one of the cafes after the tour.

There’s heaps to do when you visit Kilbroney park so bring a picnic, kids, dogs, bikes, walking boots and enjoy the day. Start at the Visitor Centre and learn about the forest and extraordinary Cloughmore Stone. There are tennis courts, play area, sports fields, an arboretum, walking and bike trails in the forest. Fiddler’s Green was once used for local entertainment and festivals.

A lovely small clearing with a few picnic tables and the Yellow Water river running beside it. The small car park is a good place to leave the car for one of the many walks in this area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there many dog-friendly hiking trails in County Mayo?

While County Mayo is a fantastic place to explore, many trails cross private farmland with livestock, especially sheep. For this reason, dogs are often not permitted, even on a leash. For example, the Keenagh Loop Trail explicitly prohibits dogs. Always check for local signage at the trailhead before starting your walk. Trails within national parks like Wild Nephin may have specific rules, so it's best to confirm beforehand.

What are some good family-friendly walks in Mayo?

For an easy and accessible outing, the Great Western Greenway is a fantastic option. It's a 42km traffic-free path on a former railway line, making it safe for walkers of all ages. You can walk short sections of it for a gentle stroll. Another great choice is the walk to the Tourmakeady Waterfall, which is a short and relatively flat path from the car park to a beautiful cascade, perfect for little legs.

Can I find any hikes with waterfalls in the area?

Yes, the Tourmakeady Waterfall is a popular and easily accessible natural attraction. The walk to the falls is known for being peaceful and refreshing, taking only about 10-15 minutes from the car park through the woods. It's an excellent short hike for a rewarding view.

Be prepared for unmarked paths and challenging terrain on the Croaghaun hike.

How difficult is the hike up Croagh Patrick?

The Croagh Patrick pilgrim trail is considered a strenuous and challenging hike. The main difficulty comes from the steep gradient and the loose, rocky scree that covers the upper sections of the path, which can be slippery underfoot. It requires good fitness and sturdy, supportive hiking boots. The panoramic views of Clew Bay from the summit are a fantastic reward for the effort.

Are there many circular or loop trails available?

For a more remote experience, the Letterkeen Loop in Wild Nephin National Park provides a challenging circular route through wilderness terrain.

Are there any challenging hikes for experienced mountaineers?
