A song that—originally from the American gospel tradition—has traveled the world is a perfect fit for this church, which the parish has dedicated to the patron saint of All Saints. "Oh when the Saints go marching in, oh when the Saints go marching in, oh Lord, I want to be in that number, oh when the Saints go marching in." Over the decades, numerous versions of the lyrics have emerged, but an original text cannot be verified due to its early oral transmission. Many artists have taken up the gospel song and released their own interpretations, such as Bruce Springsteen with his session band at a concert in Dublin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6eKkirEcgE

If you arrive earthen your booking time. Speak nicely to the guys at the ferry office and they will probably allow you to cross on the next available ferry. We were booked for a 4pm crossing, arrived at 2:40pm and were allowed on the 3pm boat 👍

The "Moot Point" bench is a great place to stop & rest after walking up from Freshwater Bay (or down the Tennysons Monument) with a great view down to the bay and across West Wight. Inscription: "The Rendez-Vous Bench Moot Point Pause to rest your weary legs here for a while....... And remember history...... and maybe your Life.... with a smile. Robert Bowman Clarke International Lawyer, Writer, Poet and Lyricist"

This hiking trail is named after a prominent poet from the 19th century: Alfred Lord TENNYSON (1809 to 1892). Coincidentally, exactly in the middle of the century, and thus almost exactly in the middle of his life, the previously commoner Alfred became 1st Baron Tennyson, and Queen Victoria personally raised him to the peerage. In the same year, she appointed him to the honorary office of 'Poet Laureate', a kind of court poet "whose job is to write poems for official occasions and national events." (Wikipedia knows). A monument here on the Isle of Wight is also dedicated to him, see https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/745205

Yes, the area offers many gentle walks suitable for families. The terrain around the River Yar is particularly flat and accessible. A great option is the Western Yar Causeway – Yarmouth Pier loop from Freshwater, which follows a former railway line, providing a safe, traffic-free path perfect for all ages.
Freshwater is very dog-friendly, with many trails suitable for walking with your four-legged friend. The open spaces of Tennyson Down are popular, but always be mindful of livestock and keep dogs on a lead where required. Coastal paths also offer great walks, but be cautious near cliff edges.
The coastline around Freshwater is famous for its dramatic scenery. For spectacular views of the English Channel and chalk cliffs, the Freshwater Bay Promenade – Freshwater Bay Cliffs loop is an excellent choice. This route follows the cliff tops, offering continuous sea views.
The Isle of Wight has a comprehensive bus network that serves Freshwater and the surrounding areas, making it possible to access many trailheads without a car. Key bus routes connect Freshwater Bay and the village to other towns like Yarmouth and Newport. Check the Southern Vectis bus timetables for the most current information.
There are several pay-and-display car parks available. Freshwater Bay has a car park right by the beach, which is a convenient starting point for many coastal and downland walks. Another car park is located near the start of the path up to Tennyson Down. Arrive early during peak season as spaces can fill up quickly.
Yes, many of the best routes in the area are circular, allowing you to start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. A rewarding loop is the Tennyson Monument – View of The Needles loop from Colwell Bay, which combines stunning coastal scenery with the historic landscape of the downs.
Hiking is possible year-round, but late spring and summer offer the best conditions with warmer weather and longer daylight hours. The downs are covered in wildflowers in spring, while autumn provides dramatic skies and quieter trails. Winter walks can be bracing and beautiful, but be sure to check the weather and trail conditions, as paths can become muddy.
The hiking around Freshwater is incredibly varied. You'll find everything from the pebble beach and chalk cliffs of Freshwater Bay to the high, grassy chalk ridge of Tennyson Down. Inland, you can explore the flat, marshy wetlands along the River Yar via The Causeway. Trails can be a mix of grassy paths, gravel tracks, and some rocky sections near the coast.
Freshwater and the nearby town of Yarmouth have several welcoming pubs and cafes perfect for relaxing after a walk. You'll find options in Freshwater Bay itself for a convenient post-hike drink or meal with a sea view, as well as more choices in the main village and along the harbour in Yarmouth.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.7 stars from hundreds of reviews. Hikers frequently praise the stunning, panoramic views from the top of the chalk cliffs and the unique experience of walking towards the iconic Needles stacks. The variety of landscapes, from coastal paths to riverside walks, is also a major highlight.
While the paths to The Needles are very popular, you can find quieter experiences by exploring the trails around the Western Yar estuary. The Western Yar Causeway – Golden Hill Fort loop from Yarmouth offers a more peaceful walk through marshland and countryside, away from the main coastal crowds.
