May 19, 2026, Torre della Carbonifera

The Torre di Carbonifera is a nineteenth-century structure located in the municipality of Piombino, within the charming Gulf of Follonica, in Tuscany. Unlike other coastal towers in the area built for defensive purposes, this one was constructed as a commercial stopover. It marked the terminal point of the historic railway with which coal extracted from the inland mines reached the sea to be embarked. Today, the tower gives its name to the renowned Spiaggia di Carbonifera, one of the most appreciated seaside resorts in the Maremma.

Part of the Tomboli State Nature Reserve, the Pineta di Follonica is a true green oasis that stretches for kilometers, offering visitors a unique experience of relaxation and nature. Divided by the city into two parts, the Pineta di Levante and the Pineta di Ponente, it offers different experiences for adults and children. A nature reserve on the outskirts of the city, perfect in summer for cooling off from the high temperatures and in winter for enjoying peace and quiet. In the less frequented areas, it is not uncommon to find spontaneous dune plants, such as the rare Sea Lily, or to hear the characteristic song of the Green Woodpecker. The pine forests are crossed by a network of trails that can be walked or cycled. In the areas closest to the city, there are also playgrounds for children and installations dedicated to fitness, for those who want to stay in shape!

A fine example of an asphalt cycle path flanked by a green area with pine trees and an adjacent road. This is a route dedicated to cycling and pedestrian mobility. The surface is asphalted and has horizontal markings to divide the directions of travel.

Along the route, you'll find well-kept public gardens, several beach establishments, and refreshment points. You can continue the walk north towards Torre Mozza beach, known for its historical remains, or south towards the Sterpaia coastal park.

Follonica, one of Tuscany's most beloved seaside destinations, offers everything you could wish for from a beach holiday: sandy beaches with facilities, clear waters, a long seafront promenade full of bars and shops, services for families, and a welcoming but never chaotic atmosphere.

The square hosts the Portale del Mistero, a work by Riccardo Grazzi from 1999. It also hosts the Torre Azzurra. A few meters of track have been left visible to recall the iron coming from nearby Elba and the shuttle to the foundry carried out by small wagons.
