December 4, 2023, Museo Burri – Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco

The structures of the Fattoria Autonoma Babacchi were built towards the end of the 1950s and were mainly used for drying the tropical tobacco produced in the Città del Castello area. Decommissioned at the beginning of the Seventies, they were assigned to Alberto Burri shortly afterwards to be used as a laboratory for the creation of large-format works. Over the years, other spaces were recovered and in 1990 the Burri Museum was inaugurated in its current structure.

Following the track of the Apennine Cycle Route which passes mostly on asphalt, I found myself on this beautiful stretch of dirt road of about 15 km. along the Tiber, beautiful beautiful.

Easy route suitable for everyone. Good state of maintenance. In summer, the large plants create a pleasant shade over a large part of the route.

The River Tiber with its length of 405km. it appears to be the main one in central Italy and third in the whole peninsula. From Monte Fumaiolo, the top of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, it is possible to locate its source at 1268m. s.l.m., its watercourse crosses the entire Umbrian region and then flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea, after having wet the Lazio region and cut the capital ROME in two. Along its entire Umbrian journey it is easy to find bridges which then gave their name to the towns developed there: Ponte Pattoli - Ponte Felcino - Ponte Valleceppi and finally Ponte San Giovanni, all located in the municipality of Perugia.

The keep of Porta Santa Maria has survived almost miraculously to the present day. A first demolition was decreed in 1872; it should have been replaced by an iron gate barrier. The city council had adopted the measure by a very large majority and some inhabitants of the course said they were willing to contribute financially, covering about one third of the expenses. But nothing came of it.

The Ex Tobacco Seccatoi, inaugurated in 1990, located on the immediate outskirts of Città di Castello, constitute an exemplary recovery of industrial archeology carried out by Alberto Burri who imagined them as a suitable place to host his latest creations. 128 works created between 1974 and 1993 are exhibited there. Burri enters the Ex Seccatoi, as he did at Palazzo Albizzini, respectful of all the potential of this incredible space, combining it perfectly with his most recent works. The enormous complex, which dates back to the immediate post-war period, was intended to collect the tobacco grown in the Upper Tiber Valley and fulfilled, in 1966, the noble task of hosting the volumes of the National Library, and of the Court of Florence after the flood, so that they are restored.
