The Tonietti Mausoleum is located in Cavo, on Mount Lentisco, in an isolated and panoramic position. It was designed around 1900 by the Florentine architect Adolfo Coppedè for the Tonietti family. The construction was commissioned by Ugo Ubaldo Tonietti, son of Giuseppe, who in 1888 had received the contract for the management of the mines of the Island of Elba and to whom he had succeeded following his father's death. The management of the mines was entrusted to Pilade del Buono. At the time, the company founded by Tonietti and del Buono was not only created to manage the island's mineral, but aimed at the construction of a steel industry on the Island of Elba. On July 29, after also winning the 1897 contract, Ugo Ubaldo founded with his partner "L'Elba società anonima di miniere e altiforni". It is in this period of ascent that Tonietti wanted to have the Mausoleum built in memory of his father Giuseppe and as a private family tomb.

The Mausoleum Tonietti is an imposing funerary building located in Pinetina, near the hamlet of Cavo (municipality of Rio), in the northeastern tip of the Island of Elba. Surrounded by the dense Mediterranean scrub on the slopes of Monte Lentisco, it represents the only important testimony of Liberty and eclectic style on the entire island.

Rio nell'Elba is one of the oldest hilltop villages on the Island of Elba, located on the north-eastern side at about 180 meters above sea level. Since 2018, it has been merged with Rio Marina into the Municipality of Rio. The village retains its strong medieval imprint, with narrow alleys, steep staircases, and picturesque little squares that tell of a centuries-old tradition linked to iron extraction.

The mausoleum is decaying and there are no more stairs to the top. Nevertheless, the visit is worthwhile.

throughout the entire strenuous tour, you never have a view of the point or the sea, you are always enclosed by vegetation... it's better to use your strength for some other climb in the area
