The dinosaur footprint found near the Buga del Figariol, on the Cansiglio plateau, represents one of the most significant paleontological discoveries in the Veneto-Friulian Prealps. The footprint is impressed on a grey limestone boulder located near a sinkhole and dates back to the Early Cretaceous, about 120-125 million years ago. The track belongs to a bipedal carnivorous dinosaur, probably a medium-sized theropod, about five or six meters long. This evidence has revolutionized the geological understanding of the area: its presence demonstrates that the ancient carbonate platform was not entirely submerged, but featured stable emerged lands that allowed large reptiles to pass. Immersed in the suggestive wooded context of the Cansiglio, the Buga del Figariol footprint transforms a quiet hiking trail into a journey through time, documenting a prehistoric ecosystem radically different from the current mountain environment.

The Casera Ceresera bivouac, 1347 metres, is an excellent base and rest point in the Cansiglio forest.

The trail system is not ideal, not very well maintained and sometimes I had to rely exclusively on the komoot GPS, however the place is beautiful. The area is used for pasture.

The dinosaur, probably from the Triassic period, which modeled the large boulder, was named "Beppino" in honor of the author of the discovery. From the sign affixed by the Polcenigo Archaeological Group in 2003 (see photo): "The RISINA is a channel with a semicircular section in stone both excavated, for the upstream stretch about 1600 meters long, and laid (codolath), for about 1700 meters later, which allowed the timber to descend from the Cansiglio, in the form of logs , tais and bore, from a position near the Torion road to Coltura. <...>"
