Nice steady climb. Good road and shady for long stretches thanks to many trees. Motorized traffic is limited.

In Lana Burgstall, the "Apfelexpress" used to branch off to Oberlana. The memorial locomotive on the banks of the Adige river, as well as the restored old iron bridge next to it, are reminders of this railway, which unfortunately ceased operations in 1974. The Lana-Burgstall–Oberlana local railway was a standard-gauge, electrified local line. Some remnants of the railway still exist, including the iron truss bridge over the Adige near Lana-Burgstall station. For a long time, it lay on land along the Adige, but in 2012 it was moved about 200 meters south and – completely restored – spanned the river again. It now connects the Adige cycle path, which runs parallel to the Bolzano–Merano railway line, with the opposite bank of the Adige. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lokalbahn_Lana-Burgstall%E2%80%93Oberlana

Schloss Tirol - Ancestral Castle of the Counts of Tirol The ancestral castle of the Counts of Tirol, which gave its name to the country, looks back on a chequered history. A first castle complex was built around 1100. Over the centuries, enlargements and conversions followed again and again, but also the "Great Fire" around 1300, which destroyed the castle almost to its foundations. In 1363, the Habsburgs inherited the County of Tirol and the castle. The famous Gothic winged altarpiece was their endowment to Schloss Tirol. A copy of it can be seen in the castle chapel, and the original is in the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum. For strategic reasons, the seat of government was moved from Schloss Tirol to Innsbruck in the 15th century. Centuries of structural decay followed. But despite its desolate state, Schloss Tirol remained firmly anchored in people's consciousness as a symbol of the country. During the Tyrolean Wars of Freedom around 1800, the castle therefore came into the sights of the Bavarian occupiers; Schloss Tirol was plundered and publicly auctioned. After the wars, the country of Tirol returned to the Austrian Empire. The city of Meran acquired the castle and presented it to Emperor Franz I. The present appearance of the complex is largely shaped by monument preservation and restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, Schloss Tirol is owned by the autonomous province of Bolzano/South Tyrol and houses the Provincial Museum of Cultural and Regional History. In the Bodega you can discover, taste and buy many regional products. Small tip, try the farmer's bread or an apple strudel.

The Adige Cycle Path had been on my to-do list for a long time. At the beginning of November, on a cloudy and rainy Saturday, the time had finally come. Hardly any other cyclists – plenty of space. Perfect! The cycle path is better developed than many roads in Italy, with sections of excellent asphalt! And of course – the most beautiful Mediterranean scenery.
