Porta Melatina is one of the best-preserved medieval city gates in Teramo and a must-see for history enthusiasts. This robust stone gate from the 13th or 14th century was once part of the city walls and owes its name to the influential noble family Melatino, who played an important role in medieval Teramo. Together with the nearby Casa dei Melatino, this place still breathes the atmosphere of bygone times. Walk under the centuries-old arch and literally step into the historic city center. A beautiful and authentic piece of medieval Teramo that has surprisingly withstood the test of time. The gate is currently (read June 2026) in need of renovation

The Church of San Luca in Teramo is a charming, minuscule church in the historic center. Although many people immediately associate this name with the gigantic basilica in Bologna, the Teramo version stands out for its extreme modesty and intimate, medieval atmosphere. The building is dedicated to the evangelist Luke. As Saint Luke is traditionally considered the patron saint of artists and painters, this church formerly held special significance for the local art guilds. A few facts: The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio in Teramo is a church within a church! The building houses an architectural peculiarity. The interior actually consists of two churches: the original, large Church of Saint Francis and a smaller Church of Saint Anthony housed in the former refectory (dining hall) of the monastery. Magnificent 14th-century portal: Although the church has been extensively rebuilt over the centuries (especially in 1327, 1577, and the early 19th century), the facade stands out with a magnificent medieval stone portal. This portal bears great resemblance to the monumental portals of the Cathedral of Atri. In the stonework on the exterior, a subtle detail is hidden. Among the decorations of the capitals and portals, tiny, almost invisible birds are carved into the stone.

The Porta Reale, invariably called Porta Madonna by the inhabitants of Teramo, is a historic city gate and an important landmark in the city. The gate forms the direct entrance to the street that leads to the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie. Some facts: Built for a royal visit. The gate was erected in the first half of the 19th century (partially rebuilt in 1825) as an arch of triumph. This was specifically intended to ceremoniously welcome King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies of the House of Bourbon to the city. Two names: The official name is Porta Reale (Royal Gate). However, the locals always call it Porta Madonna, due to its direct proximity to the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie. Medieval foundations: Although its current appearance is 19th-century, the gate stands on the site of a much older, medieval city gate. Those who look closely can still see some scarce remains of the old medieval city wall next to the gate. Strategic junction: Today, the gate marks the transition from modern Teramo to the historic center. It forms the starting point of the Corso De Michetti, the atmospheric axis that leads you deeper into the old city.

Some facts: originally a women's monastery: The complex began in the 12th century as a Benedictine monastery for nuns, then known as Sant'Angelo delle Donne. Transferred to Franciscans: Pope Eugene IV transferred the complex to the Friars Minor (Franciscans) in 1448.

If it weren't for the rush hour traffic, it would be a nice spot to visit in the historic part of the city.

Very scenic. The only flaw is that there are often tents to put it back in place, so you may not always be able to see it. In all other cases it is very suggestive.
